Norway May 2021: Ford Mustang Mach-E instant leader in market up 75.8%

The Ford Mustang Mach-E is the best-selling vehicle in Norway in May.

New car sales in Norway are up 75.8% year-on-year in May to 14.063 units, keeping in mind May 2020 was down -39% on the year prior. This way, May 2021 volumes are actually up 7.2% on May 2019 (13.117). The year-to-date tally is now up 33% to 63.783. BEV’s are up 146.6% to 8.498 and 60.4% share vs. 43.1% a year ago, PHEVs gain 78.4% to 3.221 and 22.9% share vs. 22.6% in May 2020 and HEVs are up 19.9% to 1.098 and 7.8% share vs. 11.4% a year ago. All-in-all, electrified vehicles account for 91.1% of the Norwegian market in May, the second highest ever result below the 92.5% hit last December, and to be compared with 87.1% last month and 77.1% a year ago in May 2020. Year-to-date, BEVs are up 48.7% to 34.886 and 54.7% share, PHEVs are up 80.3% to 17.169 and 26.9% share and HEVs are down -3.1% to 4.589 and 7.2% share, meaning the electrified share stands at 88.8% so far in 2021. Accordingly, petrol sales only represent 5.5% of the market vs. 9.9% at the same stage in 2020 while diesel accounts for 5.4% vs. 11.1% a year ago.

In the brands ranking, Toyota (+110.7%) reclaims the top spot it holds year-to-date with 12.4% share, and is followed this time by Ford (+631.3%) soaring 7-fold year-on-year thanks to one single model as we’ll see further down. Volkswagen (+9.1%) is knocked down to #3 ahead of Skoda (+184.2%) and Volvo (+153.5%) both doing fantastically well. No other Top 10 brand manages to outpace the market, with Audi (-9.6%) and Hyundai (-7.5%) even enduring year-on-year losses. Tesla (+1529%) stuns at #11 with Citroen (+521.4%) and Suzuki (+237%) also making themselves noticed. Among recent launches, Polestar is down 7 spots on April to #16 with 2% share while Xpeng is back up 3 to #27. This month we welcome another Chinese carmaker, DFSK (short for Dongfeng Sokon), selling two units of its Seres 3 EV. NIO returns to zero sales and is awaiting its official launch later this year.

Model-wise, we have a surprise leader this month: the Ford Mustang Mach-E up 59 spots on April pre-launch volumes to dominate the charts with a whopping 9.8% share. Expect this figure to lower over the next couple of months as backorders are fulfilled. Illustrating the dynamism of the Norwegian market and its appetite for new EVs, 3 of the Top 4 models this month are recent EV launches (<12 months): Below the Toyota RAV4 (+320.2%) at #2 for the month holding onto the YTD top spot, we have the Skoda Enyaq up four ranks to #3 with 5.7% share and its twin the VW ID.4 down three to #4. The ID.4 now ranks #3 year-to-date below the Volvo XC40 (+881.6%). The Tesla Model 3 (+6200%) is #6 and strong mid-quarter which is unusual, while the Peugeot 2008 (+2192.3%) returns inside the Top 10. The Polestar 2 is down 7 spots on April to #12 and the Citroen C4 up 29 to a record #13.
