Switzerland January 2021: Mercedes and Toyota Yaris take control in market down -19.5%
Mercedes is the most popular carmaker in Switzerland in January.
The Swiss new car market starts the year with a -19.5% year-on-year drop in January to just 15.130 registrations. Mercedes (-10.8%) resists well and takes the lead of the brands ranking for the third time in the past 6 months at 10.8% share vs. 9.6% over the Full Year 2020. BMW (-28.4%) remains in 2nd place at 8.9% just as Volkswagen (-40.9%) implodes to a paltry third place with 8.6% share vs. 11.2% over the FY2020. Peugeot (+37.4%) posts by far the best performance in the Top 10 with Ford (+4.6%) the only additional gainer. Audi (-3.7%) and Toyota (-8.8%) also hold up well in the remainder of the Top 10. Further down, Citroen (+90.4%), Kia (+27.5%), Porsche (+18.7%) and Mazda (+9.9%) stand out.
The Swiss market is one of the most fragmented in the world so its models ranking is often volatile. Case in point this month where the Toyota Yaris (+85.6%) shoots up 22 spots on December to a surreal first pole position at 2.5% share. It is followed by the Volvo XC40 up four to #2, the Skoda Octavia back up seven to #4 and the Mercedes A-Class up nine to #4. The Audi Q3 (+34.3%) and BMW 1 Series (+33.7%) also sport significant gains. The Cupra Formentor (#40) is the best-selling recent launch (<12 months) ahead of the VW ID.3 (#48) and Citroen C4 (#66).
