New Caledonia (France) Full Year 2020: Positive market (+1.9%), Toyota and Dacia Duster maintain lead, Chinese come back

New Caledonia, a French overseas archipelago, is one of only a handful of territories to display year-on-year growth in 2020. Thanks to a very solid December score (+20.8%), new car sales are up 1.9% to 7.909 units. The brands podium is unchanged on 2019 albeit displaying very different evolutions. Toyota (+13.2%) cements its lead and improves its share to 16.9% but both Dacia (-1.9%) and Peugeot (-17.3%) are in negative. Ford (+20.3%) is up 3 spots to #4 and snaps the only additional gain in the Top 9 just as Citroen (-13%), Suzuki (-9.7%), Hyundai (-9.1%), Renault (-2.9%) and Kia (-1.5%) struggle. In contrast, Nissan (+30%) scores the largest uptick in the Top 10 and Top 20. After an aborted attempt at penetrating the New Caledonian market a few years back, Chinese carmakers are back in force in 2020. Note all of them bar MG aren’t available in metropolitan France. In the detail, MG lands at #20, FAW at #22, Changan at #25, Kaicene at #32, Dongfeng at #33 and BYD at #34.
Over in the models ranking, the Dacia Duster (-1.9%) holds onto the top spot, resisting a 19.4% sure by the Toyota Hilux at #2. In fact, the entire Top 5 is unchanged on last year, but the Ford Ranger (-9.3%), Peugeot 208 (-12.8%) and Renault Clio (-8.3%) all underperform. The Toyota C-HR (+75.8%) lurches 15 spots to #9, the Hyundai Tucson (+71.6%) is up 13 to #10 and the Toyota RAV4 (+10.7%) up 4 to #6. Notice also the Toyota Rush (+67.2%), unavailable in metropolitan France, up 23 ranks to #18. The FAW Bestune X40 is the best-selling 2020 launch at #33, distancing the MG ZS (#38), Ford Puma (#42) and Changan/Kaicene F70 (#66).
