New light vehicle sales in Chile drop -30.6% year-on-year in 2020 to 258.835 vs. 372.878 in 2017, a loss of over 114.000 units. Brand leader Chevrolet (-23%) loses less ground than the market and as a result improves its market share by one percentage point to 10.5%. Despite losing share, Kia (-31.5%), Suzuki (-32.8%) and Nissan (-32.1%) all take advantage of the freefall from Hyundai (-38.7%) and step up one spot to #2, #3 and #4 respectively. All remaining Top 10 brands bar one (MG) fall faster than the market, with Toyota (-37.6%), Mitsubishi (-37.1%) and Peugeot (-34.2%) hit the hardest.
MG (+28.6%) posts the only year-on-year gain in the Top 10 – let alone a double-digit uptick, and slices its 2019 ranking in two, going from #16 to #8. It is part of a larger trend that has seen Chinese manufacturers progress in Chile this year. KYC (+1851.4%), Brilliance (+72.2%), ZX Auto (+41.5%) and Maxus (+2.3%) also post positing results while Chery (-1.4%), Geely (-5.5%), Changan (-24.4%) and BAIC (-25.7%) limit their fall. December was a particularly strong month for Chinese carmakers, which accounted for 23.8% of the Chilean new light vehicle market, believed to be their highest share all year, and certainly one of the highest all time. Over the Full Year, Chinese brands are down “just”-12.7% or less than half the market rate and improve from 15.4% share last year to 19.3%.
There are two pickup trucks atop the Chilean models ranking this year, with the Mitsubishi L200 (-21.1%) signing a 4th consecutive annual win ahead of the Toyota Hilux (-16.5%) up 4 spots to #2. But the hero of the year is the MG ZS (+36.3%) up 13 spots on 2019 to land on the third step of the podium. The ZS was even the best-selling model in the country outright for at least two months: in February and December. The Suzuki Baleno (-28%) remains in 4th place, distancing the Chevrolet Sail (-44.3%) and Kia Rio (-43.4%) both in great difficulty. Among newcomers in this year’s Top 25 we have the Chevrolet Spark GT at #8, the Chevrolet Onix at #14, the MG3 at #15, the Kia Soluto at #22 and the Changan CX70 at #25.
