Vietnam August 2020: Market drop thaws to -3.8%, Toyota Corolla Cross lands

The Toyota Corolla Cross has landed in the Vietnamese charts.

The Vietnamese new vehicle market edges down -3.8% year-on-year to 20.655 units in August, leading to a year-to-date volume down -25% to 151.903 according to VAMA. These figures climb to 27.516 and 200.929 respectively once adding Hyundai and VinFast who report sales separately and whose exclusive August figures we can share with you this month. Indeed Hyundai remains the most popular manufacturer in the country with 19.5% share above Thaco-Kia (+17.5%) overtaking Toyota (-15.9%) at 16 and 15.5% share. This means the 3 brands hold 51% of the Vietnamese market vs. 53.6% YTD. Lexus (+44.2%), Peugeot (+38.5%), Nissan (+38.2%), Mazda (+31.7%), Suzuki (+22.2%) and Isuzu (+15.3%) all impress with double-digit gains while VinFast drops one spot and one point of share vs. July to #8 and 5.4%, to be compared with a high of #5 and 8.1% last May.

Model-wise, the Toyota Vios (+11.3%) easily keeps the lead at 7.8% share, in line with the 8.1% it commands YTD. It is followed by the Hyundai Accent (+11.3%), Kia Cerato (+44.3%), Ford Ranger (-13.2%) and Hyundai Grand i10 (-11.6%). The Mazda CX-5 (+174%), Honda CR-V (+94%) and Hyundai Santa Fe (+15.6%) also impress in the Top 10 just as the VinFast Fadil drops 5 spots on July and loses the segment lead it has held for the past 3 months to the Hyundai Grand i10. Among recent launches (<12 months), below the Kia Soluto (#13), the Suzuki XL7 shoots up 16 spots on July to a record #15 and the Toyota Corolla Cross makes its very first appearance at #32.
