Hong Kong (China) April 2020: Toyota (-39.9%) tanks, Honda (-1.6%) resists in worsening market (-22.5%)
Honda sales drop just -1.6% in Hong Kong in April.
New car sales in Hong Kong pause their recovery with April down -22.5% year-on-year to 2.293 units vs. -13% in March. The year-to-date tally is now down -23.2% to 9.430. Market leader Toyota (-39.9%) falls almost twice as fast as the market but its April 2019 comparison base is particularly high and as a result its April market share (25.9%) is in line with YTD (26.9%). Honda (-1.6%) resists particularly well to 13.6% share vs. 12.5% so far this year, with Mercedes (-16.3%) and BMW (-16.8%) also both gaining share year-on-year. Tesla (+2675%) is still benefiting from the recent launch of the Model 3 but drops 3 spots on March to #5 with 4.8% share vs. 8.4% YTD. Suzuki (+225%), Hyundai (+42.3%), Subaru (+41%) and Nissan (+12.7%) also defy the market slump with spectacular gains.
