Malaysia September 2019: Proton hits highest share since March 2014 in market up 43%

Proton hits its highest market share at home in 5.5 years.

New vehicle sales in Malaysia benefit from a particularly weak year-ago result due to the end of a no-GST period to soar 43% year-on-year in September to 44.666 registrations, with the year-to-date tally now down -2.6% to 442.991. Brand leader Perodua (+79.3%) advances much faster the the market to clock a 38% share, but once again it’s Proton (+92%) that shines the brightest with the largest year-on-year gain in the Top 15. This leads to a 19.4% share, the carmaker’s highest in 5.5 years (since March 2014). Only Toyota (+75.2%) and Volkswagen (+61.4%) also outpace the market in the remainder of the Top 10, with Isuzu (-22.1%), Nissan (-21%) and BMW (-20.8%) faring the worst. Further down, Renault (+387.9%), Hyundai (+158.9%) and Lexus (+90.9%) make themselves noticed.
