Turkey May 2019: New Corolla (+4.1%) keeps Toyota afloat in market down -54.6%
The Toyota Corolla is the only Top 20 nameplate to gain ground year-on-year in Turkey this month.
No respite for the Turkish nightmare: light vehicle sales sink -54.6% year-on-year in May to just 33.016 units, leading to a year-to-date volume down -49.6% to 152.456. Fiat (-35.5%) resists a lot better than the market, resulting in a much improved 16.8% share this month and 16.1% YTD (-27.9%). It distances Renault (-52%) also slightly outperforming the overall drop, while Volkswagen (-64.5%) and Ford (-67.8%) implode. Toyota (-16.9%) scores the best hold in the Top 25, with Honda (-37.5%) and Peugeot (-51%) also gaining share year-on-year in the remainder of the Top 10. Way below in the charts, Ferrari (+200%), Alfa Romeo (+100%), Maserati (+50%) and Ssangyong (+9.7%) score the only lifts in market.
Over in the models ranking, the Fiat Egea (-13.9%) finally falls into negative but scores a 6th consecutive monthly win and 4th straight month above 10% share at a meteoric 12.9%, a shade below its all-time record of 13% hit last March. It’s the turn of the Toyota Corolla (+4.1%) to become the only nameplate in positive in the Top 20 thanks to a new generation sedan produced locally. The Renault Clio (-33.4%), Megane (-41.3%) and Ford Transit/Tourneo (-17.2%) round up the Top 5 with the Skoda Octavia (+5%), Peugeot 3008 (-12.8%) and Renault Kangoo (-19.2%) performing best in the remainder of the Top 25.
