Denmark May 2019: VW Polo (+108.2%) snaps first win this decade in market down -15.4%
The VW Polo is the best-selling vehicle in Denmark in May, a very rare feat.
New car sales in Denmark plunge -15.4% year-on-year in May to 19.074 units, yet the year-to-date tally remains in positive for now at +3.3% and 101.529. Volkswagen (-5%) is the only carmaker on the podium to lose less ground than the market, shooting up to 15.8% share as a result. That’s well above double the score of the #2 Peugeot (-35.8%) hit full frontal while Toyota (-15.1%) matches the market to round up the podium, just 5 units above Skoda (+2.4%) the only Top 5 carmaker registering an uptick this month. Below, BMW (+12.2%), Mercedes (+8.1%) and Audi (+5%) are the biggest – and only additional – gainers in the Top 10.
Model-wise, just as it seems to already be petering out in the main Eurtopean markets, the VW Polo (+108.2%) more than doubles its sales year-on-year to nab its first Danish monthly win this decade, but cannot advance higher than #4 YTD which is the ranking it held last year. The Citroen C3 (+70.9%) is also in exceptional shape at #2 but the Peugeot 208 (-44.1%) is now waiting for the 2nd generation to hit dealerships in Autumn. Only the Mercedes C-Class (+24.4%) and Skoda Octavia (+9.4%) also manage a gain in the Top 10 while the Toyota Corolla (#10) and VW T-Cross (#13) are the most popular recent launches.
