China March 2019 – New Energy: BYD back in charge in market up 111.5%
The BYD e5 is the best-selling New Energy vehicle in China in March.
Retail sales of New Energy vehicles in China including EVs, PHEVs and hybrids shoot up 111.5% year-on-year in March to 109.604 units, leading to a Q1 tally up an equally impressive 115.9% to 261.992. BYD (+337.9%) is back in charge of the brands ranking with BAIC BJEV (+226.9%) in row and Toyota (-4.8%) underperforming at #3. Mercedes continues to benefit from the Hybrid C-Class and ranks 4th overall ahead of Tesla (+152.5%) and Lexus (+10.4%). JMC and Geely also outpace the market in the remainder of the Top 10. Model-wise, the BYD e5 steps up 3 spots on last month to snap the pole position, distancing the Mercedes C-Class Hybrid and BAIC BJEV EU-Series. The Tesla Model 3 lands directly at #7, while among Chinese EV startups the Weltmeister EX5 overtakes the NIO ES8 to rank #23.
