Thailand October 2018: Toyota Hilux (+85%) reclaims YTD lead

The Toyota Hilux is now #1 YTD in Thailand.

New vehicle sales in Thailand post a 14th straight month of double-digit gains in October at +26.3% to 86.931 units, lifting the year-to-date tally up 20.9% to 833.515 registrations. 9 out of the Top 10 brands manage double-digit gains with 5 outpacing the market, starting with Toyota (+37%) up to 33.3% share, exactly 1 in 3 new vehicles registered in the country this month. Isuzu (+12%), Honda (+14%) and Mitsubishi (+18%) round up the Top 4 but all underperform, while MG (+91%), Mazda (+63%), Chevrolet (+47%) and Nissan (+37%) sign the largest year-on-year gains in the Top 10. Below, notice Volvo (+134%), Porsche (+77%), Kia (+72%), Mercedes (+61%) and BMW (+46%) all posting extravagant upticks.

The Nissan Terra has landed in Thailand.

Over in the models ranking, the big news this month is the return to the YTD pole position of the Toyota Hilux (+85%) thanks to a fantastic surge to 15.109 sales, its highest volume in over 5 years (since the 17.810 hit in May 2013), also reaching 17.4% share, its highest since November 2016 (17.8%). This is the Hilux’s 6th consecutive monthly win, something that hasn’t happened since October 2016. Surprisingly, it is also the first time since 2015 that the Hilux is #1 year-to-date at this stage of the year, having managed to claw back to the annual top spot in 2016 but not in 2017. The Isuzu D-Max (+12%) and Ford Ranger (+22%) ensure the podium is 100% pickup trucks like YTD, wth the Mazda2 (+67%) and Toyota Yaris Ativ (-9%) the best-selling passenger cars. The Suzuki Swift (+108%), Honda HR-V (+53%), Nissan Navara (+43%) and Almera (+34%) also shine and we welcome the Navara-based Nissan Terra SUV at #33 this month.
