Oman January-October 2018: Nissan Patrol authoritarian new #1 at 12.3% share

The Omani new car market drops 16% year-on-year over the first 10 months of 2018 to 103.102 units, a decline reduced to -14% when taking into account the same set of manufacturers which in effect means removing the BMW and VW Groups from 2017 figures as these have stopped reporting sales in the region. Toyota (-14%) matches the market to maintain its share at a gargantuan 49%, followed by Nissan (-2%) improving to 23.2% meaning the two carmakers hold a suffocating 72.2% of the Omani market so far in 2018. In contrast, Hyundai (-37%) and Kia (-26%) lose significant share compared to 2017, as do Isuzu (-32%), Jeep (-23%) and Mazda (-20%) in the remainder of the Top 10 whereas Honda and Mitsubishi are solid, both down just 7%. Further down, MG (+659%), Renault (+167%), Ram (+140%), Land Rover (+72%), Infiniti (+65%), Subaru (+31%), Lincoln (+14%) and Volvo (+11%) all post spectacular gains given the depressed context.

The Toyota Fortuner soars 34% to break into the Omani Top 5.

The Nissan Patrol (+42%) is the outstanding performer of the year, leaping up two spots on its FY 2017 ranking to snap the overall lead, overtaking its archenemy the Toyota Land Cruiser (-4%) in the process. Both upscale SUVs add up to a towering 22.6%. They are followed by the Toyota Hilux (-2%), Land Cruiser Pickup (-6%) and Fortuner (+34%) whereas the Toyota Prado (-64%), Camry (-17%) and Corolla (-16%) struggle in the remainder of the Top 10. The domination of Toyota and Nissan in Oman is such that the two carmakers monopolise the Top 14, with the Lexus LX (-4%) as an added bonus at #14. The Hyundai Elantra (-23%), Kia Sportage (+23%), Isuzu N-Series (-28%) and Hyundai Tucson (-52%) are the only “anomalies” in the Top 20. The best-seller recent launch (<12 month) and only one in the Top 50 is the Toyota Rush (#49)
