New car sales in the United Arab Emirates take a 19% hit over the First Half of 2018 to 107.299, a drop that reduces drastically to -10% when comparing the same set of manufacturers, in effect removing the VW and BMW Groups from 2017 figures as these have not reported 2018 sales – and the BMW brand alone held 6.6% of the UAE market a year ago. Toyota (-21%) retains the brand leadership with 28.6% share vs. 29.6% a year ago, but Nissan (+25%) is catching up fast, brilliantly improving this share from 16.7% to 25.8% in the space of just a year. In third place, Mitsubishi (+1%) also sees its share jump from 9.6% over H1 2017 to 12% now. Reversely, Hyundai (-48%), Kia (-32%), Lexus (-31%) and Ford (-20%) all freefall just below, with Lincoln (+59%), Land Rover (+39%) and Citroen (+13%) the only other double-digit gainers in market.
The Range Rover Velar lands directly at #40.
Logically given the brand’s behaviour this year, the Nissan Patrol (+35%) tightens its grip on the Emirati models ranking even further, seeing its share jump an astounding five percentage points from 7.6% a year ago to 12.6% so far in 2018. The Toyota Land Cruiser (-17%) is totally overwhelmed, only managing to maintain its share at 6.7%, and is now threatened by the Mitsubishi Pajero (+49%) in even great shape than the Patrol and seeing its share almost double from 3.3% in H1 2017 to 6% now. The Nissan Sunny (+63%) leaps up 5 spots to #4 and #1 passenger car, overtaking the Toyota Hilux (-14%), Prado (-11%), Mitsubishi Lancer EX (-28%) and Toyota Camry (-40%). The Toyota Fortuner (-8%) breaks into the Top 10 despite a sales decline but it’s the Nissan Kicks (+124%) that lodges the largest year-on-year gain in the Top 100 hitting a record #11. The Range Rover Velar (#40) is the most popular recent launch (<12 months) ahead of the Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross (#53), Chevrolet Equinox (#84) and Toyota Rush (#91) launched in June.
