Ireland May 2018: Toyota C-HR and Yaris top market up 1.4%

The Irish new car market post a second consecutive month of year-on-year gains in May at a timid +1.4% to 6.074 units, leading to a year-to-date volume down 4.3% to 85.924. Toyota soars 64% year-on-year and gains five spots on April to snap the top spot off Volkswagen (-26%) at 12.1% share vs. 11.2%. VW remains on top YTD at 10.9% share (+3%) with Toyota now up to #2 at 9.7% (-5%). Hyundai (+12%) is knocked down to #3 but Ford (+28%) is up to #4, Opel (+25%) up to #6 and Peugeot (+27%) remains at #7. The remainder of the Top 10 is in decline, with Nissan (-24%) hit the hardest. Further down, Tesla (+700%), Alfa Romeo (+250%), Jeep (+125%), Porsche (+100%), Jaguar (+73%), Mitsubishi (+48%), and Dacia (+13%) impress. Model-wise, the Toyota C-HR surges 130% year-on-year to win the month for the third time in Ireland after November and December 2016. It is followed by the Toyota Yaris (+43%), Skoda Octavia (-3%), Toyota Auris (+167%) and VW Golf (-36%). The Renault Captur (+393%) is up 14 spots on April to #6, the Hyundai is up 106% and 19 ranks to #10 with the Ford Focus (+59%), Fiesta (+62%) and Dacia Duster (+238%) also posting spectacular gains inside the Top 15. The YTD leaders are in great difficulty the Nissan Qashqai is down 31% to #34 and the Hyundai Tucson down 50% to #18.
