New car sales in Liechtenstein are up 2% year-on-year in 2017 to 2.024 units. Volkswagen remains the most popular carmaker in the country but freefalls 29% to just 12.9% share vs. 18.5% a year ago. Reversely, Audi is up 5% to 10.6%, BMW up 9% to 9.5% and Mercedes up 21% to 7.7%. Skoda (-5%) rounds up a Top 5 unchanged on 2016. Ford (+61%), Opel (+59%) and Toyota (+47%) post the largest gains in the Top 10 while further down Fiat (+100%), Alfa Romeo (+100%), Alpina (+60%), Kia (+44%), Peugeot (+37%), Dacia (+36%) and Volvo (+33%) make themselves noticed. The models order is completely reshuffled for 2017: for the first time in history, the VW Tiguan (+11%) is the best-selling nameplate in Liechtenstein, it’s also its only annual win in the world. It is the first time since BSCB started following this country in 2011 that the VW Golf is not #1, in fact it is down a steep 50% to a paltry 4th place below the Skoda Octavia (-6%) and Seat Alhambra (-19%). The VW T6 (+85%) makes the Top Five 100% VAG, with the Toyota Yaris (+91%) and Mercedes GLC (+64%) in tow and both brilliantly breaking into the Top 10. The Volkswagen Group only has 7 models in the Top 12 this year vs. 10 in 2016. The Fiat 500 (+100%), BMW 5 Series (+109%), Dacia Sandero (+186%) and Audi Q2 (+1900%) also shine in the Top 20 while the Skoda Kodiaq (#23) and Toyota Proace (#24) top new launches.
