New car sales in Germany are back up 3.9% year-on-year in October to 272.855 units, leading to a year-to-date volume up 2.3% or 66.000 sales to 2.884.676. Once again Volkswagen trails its home market with a 2% gain and posts a market share identical to its YTD level at 18.4%. Mercedes is up 7% to remain at a strong 9.8% but Audi is down 7% to 7.9% vs. 8.4% so far in 2017. Fallen down to a rare 7th place in September, Ford rallies back up 13% this month to #4, distancing Opel (-1%), BMW (-9%) and Skoda (+12%). Seat (+15%) is the third Top 10 manufacturer to post a double-digit gain in October. Beyond, Peugeot surges 38% to #11, Kia is up 16% to #13, Mazda up 15% to #15, Dacia up 40% to #17 and Mini up 16% to #19. Among smaller brands, Land Rover (+14%), Volvo (+14%), Alpina (+20%), Iveco (+32%), Suzuki (+35%), Cadillac (+50%), Lada (+65%), Tesla (+79%) and Bentley (+94%) make themselves noticed.

Over in the models ranking, the VW Golf speeds up a very robust 22% year-on-year to 20.343 sales and 7.5% share, almost one percentage point above its YTD level. This ends 13 consecutive months of year-on-year declines for the Golf and marks its largest gain since March 2015. The podium is unchanged on September with the Tiguan (-1%) in 2nd place and the Passat (-4%) in third, the latter snapping the 2nd spot YTD off the Mercedes C-Class down 1% to #7 in October. A revenant: the Ford Fiesta is up 8% year-on-year and a whopping 35 spots on September to #4, the nameplate’s first Top 10 in 2016 and its highest ranking in almost five years, since November 2012 when it ranked #4 also. The Fiesta is at #21 so far in 2017.
The Skoda Octavia remains at a cool 5th place and climbs up to #7 year-to-date, the Mercedes E-Class is up 29% to become the brand’s best-seller at home while the GLC posts a third consecutive month inside the Top 10 at #10 thanks to deliveries up 79% on October 2016. The BMW 5 Series is up 6% year-on-year but down 13 ranks on last month to #17, the Peugeot 208 justifies the brand’s surge with sales up 3-fold thanks to an aggressive fleet promotion (only 5.3% private sales this month) and the Opel Insignia doubles its sales year-on-year (+99%) thanks to the new model. The Opel Crossland X breaks into its home Top 50 for the first time to lead recent launches at #44, ahead of the Skoda Kodiaq (#51) and Toyota C-HR (#76) while the Opel Grandland X breaks into the Top 100 at #92. The Skoda Karoq is up 60 spots on September to #134, the Kia Stinger up 62 to #182 and the VW T-Roc up just 3 to #204. We welcome no less than four new nameplates in the German ranking this month: the Hyundai Kona directly at #125, the Seat Arona at #195, the BMW X2 at #289 and the Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross at #296.
