Bahrain August 2017: Top six is 100% Toyota in market down 31%

New car sales in Bahrain are down a harsh 26% year-on-year in August to 2.507 units, meaning the year-to-date tally is now down 31% after eight months at 23.396. Brand leader Toyota falls slower than the market this month at -13%, resulting in a much improved market share at 42.4% vs. 38.5% year-to-date. Nissan (-39%) overtakes Hyundai (-50%) for 2nd place overall while Kia, Mazda (both down 3%), Isuzu (-9%) and Lexus (-15%) beat the market in the Top 10. In contrast, Mitsubishi (-41%) and Honda (-52%) lose share year-on-year. Further down, notice Jeep (+6%), BMW (+18%), Dodge (+38%), Peugeot (+40%), Geely (+213%), Ram (+250%) and SAIC (+900%) among the rare manufacturers posting a year-on-year gain this month.

The Nissan Kicks is only seven sales off a Top 10 ranking in Bahrain this month. 

Illustrating the brand’s share jump, the six best-selling nameplates in Bahrain in August are Toyotas (vs. Top 4 year-to-date), led by the Land Cruiser (-27%) and Prado (+33%), potentially boosted by clear-out prices for the outgoing generation. The Corolla, Hiace (+1% both), Yaris (-26%) and Hilux (-7%) follow. As is the case year-to-date, the Hyundai Accent is the most popular non-Toyota nameplate at #6 but drops 43%. The Toyota Camry (+25%), Nissan Sunny (+56%), Kia Cerato (+32%) and Nissan Sentra (+150%) are among the most dynamic atop the models ranking, while the Nissan Kicks is up to #14, by far the most popular recent launch above the Geely X7 Sport (#34) and MG360 (#65).
