Sales of local vehicles in South Korea jump up 12% year-on-year in August to 120.847 units, meaning the year-to-date total is now only down 1% at 1.031.152 deliveries. Market leader Hyundai soars 27% to 44.3% share, distancing sister brand Kia up 10% to 33.9% whereas GM Korea (Chevrolet) is down 22% in third place. Ssangyong is up 8% but Renault Samsung down 9% and Genesis down 10%. In the models ranking, the Hyundai Grandeur is the best-seller for the 9th month in row, ahead of the Kia Sorento (+65%), Hyundai Avante (+10%) and Porter (+62%). But the big event of the month is the thunderous arrival inside the Top 10 of the all-new Hyundai Kona, up 9 spots to #10 for its 2nd month in market, already outselling segment rival the Ssangyong Tivoli (#11) and third best-selling SUV in South Korea below the Kia Sorento and Hyundai Santa Fe (#9), but already above the Hyundai Tucson (#12) and Kia Sportage (#17). Meanwhile, the Kia Stonic, based on the same platform, is up just 5 ranks to #23.
