After a 17.3% surge in May, 13.7% in June and a more discreet 2.3% in July, the Brazilian new car market soars 17.8% in August to 209.871 registrations, lifting the year-to-date tally up 5.8% to 1.380.088. This is the largest year-on-year gain in well over four years, since the 29% surge of April 2013. Brazilian car sales are well and truly out of trouble. Brand leader Chevrolet manages to outpace the galloping market with a 25% surge to 18.2% share, distancing Fiat at 14% (-1%) and Volkswagen at 12.5%, up 41% on a particularly weak August 2016 score. Hyundai (+18%) remains in 4th place above Ford (+6%) and Toyota (+7%). Honda (+30%) and most strikingly Jeep (+95%) beat the market in the Top 10, while below Peugeot (+23%), Mercedes (+40%), Suzuki (+62%), Lifan (+74%) and Chery (+100%) also do so, the latter enjoying a fourth consecutive month inside Brazil’s Top 20 brands.

The Renault Kwid is now inside the Brazilian Top 30.

Nothing car stop the frenzied sales trajectory of the Chevrolet Onix, up another 49% year-on-year in August to an astounding 8.8% share, its highest since last February (9%). The Hyundai HB20 (+1%) and Ford Ka (+8%) on the other hand lose share vs. August 2016. The Chevrolet Prisma (+27%) duplicates the success of the Onix and leaps on to 4th place this month ahead of the VW Gol back up 51% on a dismal August 2016. Notice also the Fiat Mobi up 40% to #8 and the VW Fox up 47% to #9. The Jeep Renegade reclaims the SUV title at #12 overall, distancing the Honda HR-V (-10%), Hyundai Creta up to a record #14 also hit last April and the Jeep Compass down 5 spots on July to #165. The Fiat Argo timidly gains one spot on last month to #17, crossing the 4.000 monthly sales mark for the first time in August. Finally the Renault Kwid soars 50 ranks on last month to break into the Top 30 at #27. The Chery QQ remains the most popular Chinese nameplate in Brazil at #69 ahead of the Lifan X60 (+160%) at #82 and the JAC T5 (+213%) at #88.
