The New Zealand market marks a pause in July with a meagre 0.5% year-on-year increase (or 61 units) to 11.631 registrations. Passenger cars and SUVs are down 1% or 80 units to 7.605 sales while commercial vehicles are up 4.3% or 165 to 4.026. Year-to-date however, the NZ market is up by a very sizeable 12.6% or 10.033 units to 90.737 registrations. Toyota remains the most popular manufacturer in the country by far and despite a 10% drop to 15.6% share, followed by Ford down 23% to 10.2% and Mazda up 14% to 8.7%. Mitsubishi surges 51% to 8.1%, overtaking Holden down 9% to 7.6%. Suzuki (+28%) and Honda (+44%) shine inside the Top 10 while beyond, Subaru (+23%), Audi (+40%), BMW (+28%), Skoda (+23%) and Peugeot (+76%) post the largest gains in the Top 20.

The refreshed Toyota Yaris is up 77% year-on-year this month.

Model-wise, the Ford Ranger holds onto the top spot over the Toyota Hilux by the smallest of margins this month – one unit – but retains an almost 1.000 unit0-advantage year-to-date. Strikingly, the Top 4 best-sellers are all pickup trucks this month, with the Mitsubishi Triton (+64%) at #3 and the Holden Colorado (+9%) at #4. The three next best-sellers are all SUVs: the Kia Sportage (-13%), Mazda CX-5 (+42%) and Mitsubishi Outlander. The #1 passenger car, the Toyota Corolla, ranks only 8th and is the only one in the Top 13. In fact, there are only seven passenger cars in the Top 30: the Holden Commodore (#14, +23%), Suzuki Swift (#17), Toyota Yaris (#18, +77%), Mitsubishi Lancer (#25), Honda Jazz (#27) and Mazda3 (#30). Other great performers include the Nissan Qashqai (+30%) and Honda CR-V (#21).
