Austria June 2017: Discounted VW Polo surges 82% to #2

The Austrian new car market is up 5% year-on-year in June to 35.441 registrations, lifting the year-to-date tally up a very robust 8.6% to 186.561 units. Market leader Volkswagen evolves like the market with a 5% gain leading to a 17.2% market share, identical to its YTD level. Skoda surges 19% in 2nd place to 6.5% ahead of Hyundai (+0.1%), Opel (-5%) and Ford (+0.3%) all under-performing. Seat (+22%), Mercedes (+22%), Fiat (+19%), Kia (+15%), Toyota (+33%) and Suzuki (+18%) post the largest year-on-year gains inside the Top 20. Further down, Porsche (+44%), Lexus (+43%), Subaru (+48%) and Lada (+75%) also shine.
The Hyundai i20 is the best-selling non VW Group nameplate in Austria this month.
The VW Golf remains the best-selling vehicle in the country despite a 4% drop to 4.5% share but the most impressive year-on-year gain inside the Top 10 is the works of the VW Polo, boosted by deep discounts on the outgoing generation and seeing its sales surge 82% year-on-year to 3.8% share. The Polo knocks down the Tiguan (-16%) to now rank #2 year-to-date. The Skoda Octavia is up 32% to #3, the Seat Ibiza up 15% year-on-year and 7 spots on May to #5 and the Hyundai i20 is up 25% to become the best-selling non-VW Group nameplate in Austria. Notice also the Seat Leon up 25%, the Fiat 500 up 33% and the Ford Kuga up 189%. The Fiat Tipo (+156%) continues to climb the ranking, breaking into the Top 20 to hit #18 this month. Among recent launches, the Skoda Kodiaq is up 14 spots to #41 the Toyota C-HR up 23 to #61 and we welcome the Opel Crossland (#113), new Jeep Compass (#129) and Range Rover Velar (#209).
