Instead of getting better, the Brazilian new car market sinks further into depression in February at -6.8% year-on-year to 132.405 registrations, pulling the year-to-date tally down 5.4% to 275.966 units. Chevrolet once again bucks the trend with a stellar 7% gain to 23.214 units and 17.5% share, comfortably in pole position above Fiat down 12% at 14.3% share and Volkswagen down 13% to 13% share. Hyundai is back up to the 4th place in occupied over the Full Year 2016 in spite of a brutal 14% drop to 11.974 sales. It distances Ford (11.898) and Toyota (11.116) both down 11%. Honda improves share thanks to a contained 1% decline to 9.388, ahead of Renault (-13%) while Jeep leaps up 42% and Nissan gains 25% to round out the Top 10. Further down, only Suzuki (+1%) and Mercedes (+8%) register year-on-year gains inside the Top 20, with Land Rover (-32%), Kia (-46%) and Audi (-47%) suffering the largest losses.
The Hyundai Creta leaps up 17 spots on January to land just outside the Top 20.
In the models ranking, the Chevrolet Onix continues to evolve in its little bubble, ignoring the overwhelming gloom and surging 16% year-on-year to 11.980 sales and 9% share, with the Hyundai HB20 (-17%) and Ford Ka (+4%) following a fair distance away. The VW Gol catches up on a dismal start of 2016 with sales up 18% year-on-year just as the Renault Sandero at #5. Below the Honda HR-V up 4 spots on January but down 24% year-on-year, the Fiat Toro stuns once again: it breaks its ranking record dating back to October 2016 (#8), lifting its to #7 thanks to 3.582 sales, the best-selling pickup truck in the country above the Fiat Strada (#10), VW Saveiro (#14), Toyota Hilux (#27) and Chevrolet S10 (#32). Among other recent launches, the Fiat Mobi remains at #13, the Jeep Compass is down two spots to #16 and back below the Jeep Renegade (#15), the Hyundai Creta gains 17 spots on January to #21, the Nissan Kicks is up 4 to #25 and the Renault Captur up 7 to #67.
