South Africa August 2016: Hilux and Fortuner keep Toyota afloat

New vehicle sales in South Africa are down 9.5% year-on-year in August to 46.146 units, pulling the year-to-date tally down 11% to 363.410 units after 8 months. Toyota remains the most popular manufacturer in the country an manages to go against the overall negative trend with deliveries up 4% to 10.309 for a 22.3% market share vs. 21.2% so far in 2016. The Volkswagen Group (-10%), Ford (-17%) and Hyundai-Kia (-6%) follow as per the YTD ranking while Nissan (-11%) overtakes General Motors/Isuzu (-32%) for 5th place overall. Notice Mazda (+15%) and Mahindra (+25%) in frank positive territory. Model-wise, the Toyota Hilux (+26%) cements further its leadership of the market with 3.081 sales, distancing the VW Polo Vivo (+1%), Ford Ranger (-10%), VW Polo (-9%) and Isuzu KB (+2%). The Toyota Corolla (-39%) and Nissan NP200 (-19%) struggle whereas the Toyota Fortuner (+57%), Hyundai i20 (+122%) and VW Amarok (+56%) post spectacular gains.
