Ireland September 2016: Volkswagen monopolises podium

One month for weakness for Irish new car sales, down 1.7% year-on-year in September to 4.689 registrations, however at 143.195 unit the year-to-date tally is still up by a phenomenal 18% on the same period in 2015 which itself was up 30% on 2014. Volkswagen bucks the negative trend and gains 12% to sit on 14.4% market share, monopolising the models podium ranking with the Golf (#1), Passat (#2) and Tiguan (#3). In the Top 10, Ford (-16%), Nissan (-12%), Toyota (-21%), Hyundai (-17%) and Opel (-13%) all lodge double0-digit declines whereas Skoda (+4%) and Kia (+18%) stay above the water, Further down, notice Renault (+95%), Mercedes (+72%), Mazda (+65%), Mini (+62%), Land Rover (+263%), Seat (+171%) and Jaguar (+119%) all posting spectacular gains. Model-wise, the Ford Focus, Skoda Octavia and Hyundai Tucson are the best-selling non-VW, with the latter holding onto its year-to-date leadership at 7.373 sales vs. 5.040 for the VW Golf. The BMW 5 Series (#11), Opel Mokka (#14) and Renault Mégane (#20) shine.
