The freefall continues for the Uruguayan new car market with May sales down another 15% year-to-date to 3.253 units, pulling the year-to-date total down 21% to 16.666 deliveries. Fiat is completely oblivious to the depressed context, improving by a whopping 154% year-on-year to hold onto the #1 spot for just two sales in May at 457 and 14% share vs. 455 for Volkswagen (-4%), also #2 year-to-date. Renault stays on the podium thanks to volumes up 15% while last year’s leader Suzuki tumbles down 57% to just 266 sales and Chevrolet is hit even harder at -60% to 183. Toyota doubles its May 2015 result to hit #8 while BYD (#11) , Geely (#12) and Lifan (#13) lead Chinese carmakers on the whole down 36% in May and 40% so far this year due to the demise of Chery, down to a mere 3 sales this month.
