Irish new car sales pause in May at -6% to 6.506 registrations, yet a fantastic start of the year allows the year-to-date tally to still be 23% above the same period last year at 99.713 units. Despite sales down 10%, Volkswagen is alone on top in the brands ranking with 14.3% share vs. 9.1% for Ford (+10%) and 8.4% for Toyota (-21%) and this time it’s enough to take the year-to-date lead, overtaking both Toyota and Hyundai at once with 10.741 sales vs. 10.491 and 10.300 respectively. Skoda (+21%), Audi (+21%), Mazda (+24%), BMW (+32%), Suzuki (+37%), Mercedes (+106%) and Jaguar (+113%) take off. Model-wise, in May the VW Golf reclaims the top spot it held last year for the third consecutive time but the Hyundai Tucson, lurking at #2 this month, isn’t in the least threatened year-to-date (for now) at 5.075 sales vs. just  3.641 for the Golf. The Mercedes E-Class (#11) and Renault Megane (#12) impress.
