Papua New Guinea is one of the world’s least explored nations culturally and geographically. It occupies the eastern half of the island of New Guinea north of Australia, with the western half forming the Indonesian provinces of Papua and West Papua. It is home to 7.1 million inhabitants, most of them living in customary communities which are as diverse as the 848 languages listed for the country. Papua New Guinea is one of the most rural countries in the world, with only 18% of the population living in urban centres, and one-third of the population living on less than US$1.25 per day.

However, due to its larger population, Papua New Guinea is one of the four biggest Oceanic new car markets with 8.055 new registrations in 2015 (-3%), most of it confined to the capital Port Moresby as well as mining areas. As it is the case in almost every single nation in Oceania (bar American Samoa), Toyota is the most popular manufacturer in Papua New Guinea with a whopping 54.9% market share and follows the market with sales down 3% year-on-year, distancing Isuzu up 9% (14.4%) and Nissan down 12% (7.2%). Kia (2.6%) makes its entrance inside the Top 10 brands for 2015. Utilitarian models dominate the sales charts, with the Toyota Land Cruiser 70 obliterating the competition with a 28.8% market share, particularly popular in in its Troop Carrier 10-seater and Single Cab pickup truck configurations. The Toyota Hiace (8.7%), Coaster (7.4%) and Hilux (7%) also shine.
