Government measures restricting imports of new car in the country have hurt the Algerian market: after losing 20% over the Full Year 2014, new car registrations are down another 15% halfway through 2015 to just 160.000 units overall, 148.208 (-15% also) for AC2A-registered manufacturers – the missing deliveries are mainly Chinese manufacturers who have never disclosed Algerian sales openly. The 2nd half of the year is bound to be even more catastrophic as the pipeline of imports will progressively dry up in the absence of any end to the new government restrictions. Renault (+1%), Dacia (+21%) and Peugeot (+2%) spectacularly buck the trend to account for a combined market share of over 45%. All other manufacturers in the Top 15 lose ground, with Volkswagen (-38%), Seat (-58%), Ford (-60%) and Chevrolet (-66%) the hardest hit.
…while its twin the Renault Symbol, now produced locally, is up 28%.
Over on the models ranking, the Dacia Logan keeps the pole position it held in both 2013 and 2014 thanks to sales up a spectacular 33% to 13.758, distancing the Hyundai Accent (-22%) at 9.352 while the Renault Symbol, now produced locally, is up 28% to land on the third step of the podium, even leading the market outright in May. Other great performers inside the Top 15 include the Peugeot 208 (+25%), Renault Clio IV (+12%), Toyota Yaris (+178%) and Peugeot Partner (+16%).
