For the first time on BSCB and thanks to NAAMSA I can share with you official information on the best-selling brands and models in Lesotho. Translating into “the land of the people who speak Sesotho” and just over 30.000 km2 in size, Lesotho is an enclaved landlocked country completely surrounded by South Africa and home to just over two million inhabitants, 40% of which live below the international poverty line of US$1.25 a day. Rankings by brand, passenger car models and overall light vehicles are available and paint a very different picture from the South African market that surrounds it. Note these rankings only include the models reported to NAAMSA, however almost 100% of new vehicles sold in Lesotho are imported from South Africa and thus reported to NAAMSA so this is an almost exact depiction of the Masotho market for 2014.
The Mercedes E-Class is the 3rd best-selling passenger car in Lesotho.
Toyota is ultra-dominant in Lesotho, placing seven nameplates within the Top 10 best-selling light vehicles in the country, including the Hilux (#1) selling almost 400 units, Etios (#2 and best-selling passenger car) with 85 deliveries and Corolla (#3) at just above 50 sales. Mercedes ranks at an astounding third place overall, with the E-Class the third best-selling passenger car and 7th best-selling light vehicle overall. American manufacturers also do surprisingly well in Lesotho: Jeep is #4 and places both the Wrangler and Grand Cherokee inside the Top 10 passenger cars, while Dodge ranks #9 and Chrysler #10.
