Recovery is still there for the Venezuelan new car market in April, albeit at a much lower growth rate than in March: up 33% year-on-year to 1.732 registrations which brings the year-to-date total to 7.551 units, up 67% on 2014 but down 86% on April 2013, a much more realistic benchmark, when 12.764 new vehicles found a buyer. A recent report by Automotive News USA outlined the fact that currency control prevents car makers present in Venezuela to repatriate earnings out of the country back to the mother company’s country. In this context, Ford de Venezuela has started selling vehicles in US dollars (1.187 of them) in an attempt to go around the rule. This month Mitsubishi resists the best with almost 25% of the market ahead of Toyota, Ford, Chevrolet and Dodge, all above 10% share. The Dodge Forza, assembled locally, is the best-selling nameplate in the country this month thanks to 204 units sold ahead of the Mitsubishi Montero Sport and the Ford Explorer, both up 10 spots on March. The Mitsubishi Lancer is down to #11 but remains in pole position so far in 2015.
