After the traditional monthly look at the Top 10 and a more detailed look at March sales earlier today, we now explore the First Quarter 2015 figures in Mexico to extract longer-term trends. The main learning from this complete ranking is the 10th place of the Mazda3 with sales up a fantastic 161% to 7.003 units at #10. This was not picked up in our monthly rankings as AMDA traditionally detail the monthly Top 5 best-sellers by segment and the Mazda3 is split between sedan and hatch variants by AMDA and therefore falls down the ranking. The reason behind this sudden surge is the recent relocation of the North American production to Mexico, giving Mexican car buyers an immediate price reduction on the model. Other nameplates to see their sales soar this year because of a Mexican production kick start include the Honda Fit up 345% to #27.
Notice also some very significant gains by the Nissan X-Trail thanks to the new model (+359%), the Ram Pickup (+53%) getting dangerously close to the Ford F-Series (+8%) at 3.631 units vs. 3.943 and the Toyota Yaris up 130% thanks to the new generation hatch. We detailed in the detailed March update the switching on of the Dodge Attitude (+1046%) and VW Golf (+7847%). Below the Hyundai Grand i10 leading the all-new nameplates at #33, we find the Renault Logan at #59: Renault-Nissan is relaunching the Logan in Mexico indeed: it tried 7 years ago with the first generation called Nissan Aprio here. Better luck with Renault branding? Notice also the Dodge Vision – a rebadged Fiat Gran Siena – at #88 and the Suzuki Ciaz, new for 2015 but already inside the Top 100 at #91.
