Another negative month for new car sales in Switzerland, down 5% year-on-year in May to 25,787 registrations which brings the year-to-date total to 121,986 units, down 4% on 2013. Once again the Volkswagen Group monopolises the Top 5 with the VW Golf, Skoda Octavia, Audi A3, VW Tiguan and Polo leading the way, and this time it monopolises the year-to-date Top 5 as well in a slightly different order: VW Golf, Skoda Octavia, VW Tiguan, Audi A3 and VW Polo. Inside the Top 10, other great performers are the VW Touran back up a huge 25 spots on April to #7, the Toyota Auris at #9 vs. #16 year-to-date and the Audi A4 up 6 ranks to #10.
But the big news in Switzerland this month is the tremendous success of the Mercedes GLA. In a country very fond of luxury brands and compact SUVs, the GLA seems indeed like the perfect equation. It is up 75% and 51 spots on April to land at a world-best 12th spot with 287 sales and 1.1% share, only 9 units off the Audi A4 at #10! A Top 10 ranking sometime in the coming months is absolutely in the realm of possibilities for the GLA which has become Mercedes’ best-seller in Switzerland this month above the A-Class (#20).
Further down, notice the Suzuki Swift stable at #15 vs. #25 year-to-date, the Citroen C3 up 17 ranks to #16, the Seat Alhambra up 30 to #25, Mazda3 up 14 to #26 and the BMW 4 Series inside the Top 50 for the 2nd month running. The new model pushes the Subaru WRX directly up to # 45 with 184 sales and 0.7% while the Porsche Macan continues to progress, up 19 spots to #72 at 122 units and 0.5%, and once again Porsche’s best-seller in the country above the 911 at #92.
