Switzerland February 2014: Seat Leon shoots up to 5th place

The Swiss new car market is down 1% year-on-year in February to 21,931 registrations, bringing the year-to-date total to 42,145 units, down2 % on 2013. Brand-wise, below Volkswagen stable at 12.2% share, BMW holds onto its 2nd spot thanks to sales up a magnificent 23% to 1,437 and 6.6% share, remaining above Skoda down 21% to 6.5%. Audi is up one spot on January to #4, Mercedes down two to #5 and Renault up 5 to #6. In the models sales charts, the VW Golf reclaims the pole position off the Skoda Octavia both this month with 850 sales and 3.9% vs. 781 and 3.6% and year-to-date at 1,549 units and 3.7% vs. 1,503 and 3.6%. The VW Tiguan is up one rank on last month to #3, a ranking it now also holds year-to-date.

Boosted by the new model now widely available, the Nissan Qashqai is up 17 spots on January to land at an outstanding 4th place with 330 sales and 1.5%, but the best performer of the month is the Seat Leon up 8 ranks to break into the Swiss Top 5 for the very first time at #5 with 322 units and 1.5%. The Leon is now also #5 year-to-date vs. #29 over the Full Year 2013! Other great performers this month include the Suzuki Swift up 67 spots to #7, the Hyundai i20 up 13 to #10, Dacia Duster up 9 to #24, Fiat Panda up to #32 vs. #49 in 2013 and the BMW 4 Series breaking into the Swiss Top 100 at #96.

Finally, let’s award a special mention to Maserati this month. With 55 sales, the Italian luxury marque is up a gigantic 2650% year-on-year, adding up to 127 units so far in 2014, up 2017% on 2014. This result has almost everything to do with the new Ghibli which sold 44 units in February for a 0.6% market share and ranks 117th year-to-date with a round 100 sales.
