As is the tradition on BSCB I share with you today detailed Private Sales (PS) data for Germany. As you know these rankings are always a little controversial because of the definition of ‘private’ in Germany. Are counted as Private Sales the cars sold to private buyers. Demo cars, rental cars and long-term leases are not counted as private. This explains the fact that as cars become more expensive, their Private Sales ratio tends to drop: a lot of them are actually on a long-term lease, which can be argued is a private ‘sale’. In January 72,511 new vehicles were sold to private buyers in Germany, that’s a 35.2% PS ration compared with 37.9% over the Full Year 2013. The podium is identical to the FY2013 ranking: the VW Golf dominates, followed by the Polo and Tiguan.
It’s below that things get interesting: not only did the Opel Mokka become the brand’s best-seller in Germany overall for the first time this month, it is also up to a fantastic (and best-ever) 4th place with private buyers thanks to 1,632 sales and an outstanding 64.2% PS ratio. The Mercedes A-Class remains 5th ahead of the Dacia Sandero which continues to defy traditional purchase behaviours by ranking 6th with 1,435 units and 89.7% PS ratio. Other great performers this month include the Ford Kuga up to #10, the Dacia Duster up to #17 and the Mazda3 up to #25.
