Another month of year-on-year growth for South African new car sales, at +3% in June to 53,562 registrations, which brings the year-to-date total to 321,770 units, up a solid 7% on 2012. After dropping to #3 last month (a very rare occurrence), the VW Polo Vivo – none other than a facelifted previous gen Polo – is back up 2 spots to lead the South African models ranking this month thanks to a whopping 3,681 sales and 6.9% share, its best scores since last January and the 6th time it ranks #1 in the last 12 months. However this is not enough to catch up with the Toyota Hilux, down to #2 this month at 3,070 units and 5.7% but still leader year-to-date at 19,144 sales and 5.9% vs. 18,816 and 5.8% for the Polo Vivo. It will be another close race this year for the pole position…
Below the VW Polo down to #3 but strong at 5% share, the Nissan NP200 (aka Dacia Logan Pick-up) is up 3 spots to hit a best-ever 4th place with 1,682 units and 3.1%, its best monthly scores since May 2012. The Toyota Corolla/Auris is also up 3 ranks to #5 to pass its little sister the Etios for the first time since last August. Note this is the 14th month in a row the Toyota Etios manages to rank inside the South African Top 7! Amazing consistency indeed for Toyota’s low cost entry, at odds with the mild reception it has received so far in India and Brazil. Notice also the Mercedes C-Class up 4 ranks to #9, the BMW 3 Series up 2 to #10 and the Ford Kuga up an impressive 13 spots to land at #18.
