Motor Trader Malaysia today announced that Frost & Sullivan revised its Malaysian full year 2013 volume up from 600,000 previously to 638,000 units which would constitute a new all-time record for this market, up 2% on 2012 which is the current record. Motor Trader also reports Kavan Mukhtyar, Partner & Head of the Automotive & Transportation Practice, Asia Pacific as saying that another reason for the forecast’s upward revision is that the likely impact of Malaysia’s electoral uncertainty during the run-up to the 2013 General Election was not as high as expected.

Halfway through 2013, the Malaysian new car market is up 4% year-on-year to 313.488 units. The launch of the lower-priced Perodua S-Series models (across MyVi, Viva and Alza) as well as the new generation Honda CR-V has reportedly had a positive impact on sales. Proton has responded by launching the sharply priced Saga SV in mid-June and we should see the effects of this launch on the general market through July. The launch of the new generation Toyota Vios and Proton Preve Hatchback in Q3 2013 should enable sales to stay at record levels through to the end of the year.

All-in-all, Perodua keeps the brand leadership thanks to 96,873 sales and 30.9% share while Proton drops to 20.7% at 64,782 units and Toyota falls to 14% with 43,747 sales. Nissan improves massively from 5.8% share over the Full Year 2012 to 8.4% halfway through 2013, Honda goes from 5.6% to 7%, Mitsubishi gains two spots to #6 and 2.1% share, Ford and Mazda are both up 4 to #8 and #10 respectively, Kia up 3 to #15, Audi up 4 and doubling its market share to #20 and Subaru up a huge 15 ranks to #26.

And this is all the sales info you will get for Malaysia: since May 2012 there is no models sales data released for this country. This is because the Competition Commissioner believes that sharing of detailed historical sales data will a negative effect on competition and place consumers at a disadvantage. As a result many companies are unwilling to supply the data to the Malaysian Automotive Association. Hopefully this won’t last for too long because we are missing out on crucial information for a potential Top 20 worldwide market in the next couple of years.
