Paraguay Full Year 2012: Toyota Hilux and Kia Picanto dominate

After taking off by 45% in 2011, new vehicle sales in Paraguay are down 2% year-on-year in 2012 to 28,887 registrations. The Toyota Hilux remains the most popular vehicle in the country by far and sees its sales jump a massive 53% year-on-year to 2,935 units for a 10.3% market share. The Nissan Frontier makes the Top 2 100% pick-up, up one spot on 2011 to #2 with 1,586 sales and 5.5%, and the Kia Picanto comes from outside the Top 10 directly inside the podium this year at 1,355 units and 4.7%.

The Kia Rio is down 13% and 2 ranks to #4 with 1,320 sales and 4.6%, followed by the Isuzu Pick-up and Hyundai Tucson, both up 2 spots to 1,181 units and 4.1% and 1,112 and 3.9% respectively. Other newcomers in the Top 10 this year in Paraguay are the Hyundai i10 arriving at #8 with 904 sales and 3.1% and the Hyundai Accent at #9 with 841 units and 2.9%. Nearly one in 3 cars sold in Paraguay is Korean and 7 in the Top 10 most popular models are Korean and the Top 2 brands in the country are now 100% Korean: Kia is #1 at 15.7% share (+7%) and Hyundai #2 at 13.7% (+28%).

DongFeng Mini Pick-up

Another characteristic of the Paraguayan new vehicle market in 2012 is the increased presence of Chinese carmakers: there were 7 in the Top 30 in 2011, they are now 10… Dongfeng leads the way, up 57% to #11 with 477 sales and 1.7% and now produces pick-up trucks locally. It is followed by Great Wall at #18 with 277 units and 1% (-34%), ChangAn at #21, Haima at #22, Foton at #23, ChangHe at #24, Higer at #25, Zhengzhou at #27, JMC at #28 and BYD at #30.
