Portugal November 2012: VW Golf 7 in pole position straight away!

VW Golf 7

* NOW UPDATED with the Top 40 all-brands ranking! *

* See the Top 20 best-selling models by clicking on the title! Many thanks to José *

After falling by 30% in September and 5% in October, the Portuguese new car market is down 25% year-on-year in November to 7,217 registrations. The year-to-date total now stands at 88,945 units, still down a horrid 37% on 2011. Detailed models rankings for Portugal are likely to become rarer now that car magazine Guia de Automóvel has stopped publishing, one of the consequences of the economic crisis that is still hitting the country.

Audi A3

For their last issue they have published a models ranking that thanks to José I am able to share with you here, and it has the particularity of splitting sales of Golf 6 and 7. Surprise: the Golf 7 directly shoots up to pole position for its first month with 281 units sold and 3.9% share! It is ahead of the Renault Megane, still leader year-to-date with 4,246 units and 4.8% (-46%), by just one unit… An oddity: the Peugeot 208, #1 in September, is not in the Top 20 this month!

Renault Clio IV

Another model to make its first appearance in the Portuguese Top 20 this month is the Renault Clio IV at #7 and 171 units, just below its older sister the Clio III at #6 and 175. What is true in Europe currently is especially the case in Portugal: in tough times, premium brands do better – at least with fleet sales. Audi and BMW both place 3 models in the Top 20 again this month: the Audi A3 is up to a fantastic 5th position with 228 sales, followed by the BMW 1 Series at #6 and 203 units, with the 3 Series at #10, A4 at #17, 5 Series at #19 and A1 at #20.

Brand-wise, Volkswagen is ahead in November at 11.8% share ahead of Renault at 10.2% and Peugeot at 9.1% but Renault remains in the top spot year-to-date with 9,510 sales and 10.7% (-38%) with Volkswagen at #2 with 9,137 units and 10.3% (-35%). This month only BMW (+3%), Mercedes (+9%), Skoda (+19%), Land Rover (+9%) and Lancia (+8%) gain ground year-on-year, while year-to-date absolutely no brand in the Top 20 is in positive, with Audi (-8%), BMW (-13%) and Mercedes (-19%) the best performers.

Best wishes for the New Year! Plus my 50 questions for 2013…

It is time for me to send you all my best wishes for the New Year 2013, may it bring you and your loved ones all you ever wanted! 2012 was a fantastic year for BestSellingCarsBlog, going from strength to strength all thanks to you: You were 900,000 to visit BSCB at least once this year, 3.5 times more than in 2011! So a HUGE Thank You to all of you who have kept coming back to and made it what it is today by sharing some rare data.

Chery is creating a new brand for Europe: Qoros. Will it be a success?

Many new countries and territories have started being regularly updated this year on BSCB, I have to say it’s one of my favourite moments: when a country can finally be explored in detail. In particular Bulgaria, EstoniaIceland, Hong Kong (China), Macedonia, Philippines, Puerto Rico and Singapore have all become regular fixtures on the site, thanks to tips from you readers! If you have sales figures for any country or territory that doesn’t appear on the list please do not hesitate to get in touch by clicking on ‘Contact’ above!

The Lada Granta did end up dominating Russia this year after a few hesitant months…

If you were already a BSCB reader one year ago, you will remember I featured a list of world car sales questions for 2012, the first of which being ‘Will the Lada Granta dominate Russia?’ It did, but took a little more time than expected… You will find all the answers to these 25 questions for 2012 below the jump, as well as my 50 questions for 2013, starting with:

The Chevrolet Onix has the potential to threaten the VW Gol in Brazil. Will it?

1. Will Chery crack Europe with the Qoros GQ3?

2. Will the Hyundai HB20 or Chevrolet Onix threaten the VW Gol’s supremacy in Brazil?

3. Which Passenger Car will top the Chinese year-end ranking?

4. Will General Motors, Toyota, Hyundai or any other major manufacturer announce the creation of a low-cost brand outside China? Will Nissan unveil a low-cost Datsun range as planned?

5. Will the new BYD F3 and Chery QQ make 2013 the year of the renaissance for local models in China?

6. Will Kaili, Volkswagen’s low-cost Chinese brand, finally be launched? If so will it be more successful than GM’s Baojun? Nissan’s Venucia? Honda’s Linian? Ciimo?

Opel Adam

7. Will the Mokka and Adam help Opel towards recovery?

8. Will a BMW or Mercedes break into the UK year-end Top 5 for the first time?

9. Will the Renault Duster break into the monthly Top 5 in Russia? India?

The Dacia Dokker could cannibalise sales of Renault Kangoo at home in France…

10. Will the Dacia Dokker dominate the French LCV market, the biggest in Europe?

World 10 months 2012: Discover the Top 185 best-selling models!

The VW Golf is now #3 worldwide in 2012, ahead of the Golf 7 launch (above).

* For worldwide October 2012 detailed figures and commentary go here *

* See the Top 185 best-selling models by clicking on the title! *

Now that October 2012 has been covered in detail, as is now the tradition on BSCB I go through the year-to-date worldwide ranking to keep you abreast of all the longer-term evolutions, and this month there is a lot of change atop the ranking. If the Ford Focus and Hyundai Elantra ranked above the Toyota Corolla for the month of October, this does not impact the Top 2 positions which are pretty much cemented for the rest of the year. The Corolla is still in pole position year-to-date at 938,507 sales, over 100,000 above the Ford Focus – an unsurmountable gap for the Ford…

Outstanding Chinese sales have pushed the Hyundai Elantra to #5 year-to-date

However below the two favourites, the cards are being redistributed: even though it is down to #7 in October, the VW Golf passes the Toyota Camry (itself down to #11 on the back of weak Chinese sales) to establish itself on the third step of the podium with 648,469 sales. The arrival of the 7th generation in Europe early in November should only help the Golf reaffirm this new worldwide ranking up until the end of the year. Now that China has a big green tick against it with a very successful launch of the last generation, the Hyundai Elantra is up 2 ranks year-to-date to #5 with 641,198 units and could pass the Camry – and even the Golf – if strong Chinese sales continue…

Hyundai ix35

The Ford F-Series is undisturbed at #6 while the Chevrolet Cruze drops 2 spots to #7 year-to-date this month. Also on the back on extremely solid figures in China and 70,000+ worldwide sales performances this month, both the VW Passat (#8) and Jetta (#9) gain one rank, leaving the Ford Fiesta down 2 to #10. I told you the Top 10 had a bit of a shake this month! We have to go down the ranking to find other models gaining some significant ground: the Hyundai Tucson/ix35, Wuling Hongguang and Kia Cerato/K3 all up 3 to #32, #52 and #53 respectively.

Renault Duster

Renault has cracked India single-handedly with the Duster: as a result the low-cost 4WD hits a best-ever #33 this month and is up 5 spots year-to-date to #58, as is the VW Lavida at #71. The Citroen C4 and Peugeot 308 are both up 4 to #75 and #86 respectively, the Hyundai Santa Fe is up 7 to #90, the BYD F3 up 5 to #132, the Peugeot 208 up 17 to #140 and Emgrand EC7 up 5 to #141.

Finally to give a bit of perspective to all this data madness: if the Corolla and possibly the Focus will be the only models to break the magical “million annual sales barrier” this year, so far after 10 months no less than 13 vehicles have sold over 500,000 units so far, 21 more than 400,000, 41 more than 300,000, 69 over 200,000 and 161 at least 100,000…

World October 2012: Ford Focus and Hyundai Elantra on top!

The Hyundai Elantra passes the Toyota Corolla worldwide potentially for the first time ever…

* See the Top 150 best-selling models by clicking on the title! Many thanks to Austin *

With official October figures now all in, I am able to share with you the Top 150 most popular cars around the planet in October. Please note these are October figures, not November yet which will be published in the New Year once all data is in. I know the World November Roundup was published a few days ago so apologies for going back one month but this ranking takes much longer to compile… Remember this is based on sales in the 60+ countries that are updated monthly on BSCB, except for Ford and Renault/Dacia which are official worldwide figures. So most sales figures for each model are a minimum.

The Ford Focus is #1 in the world for the 2nd time running…

While last month the Ford Focus had started to benefit from the Japanese drama in China to pass the Toyota Corolla and historically grab the worldwide pole position, in October things are getting worse (before they get better in November) for Toyota: handicapped by dramatically low sales in China, the Corolla now drops to #3, passed by the Hyundai Elantra! The Focus stays on top with 88,096 sales, ahead of the Elantra at 74,386 units – its strongest worldwide month so far in 2012 and benefitting from a very successful launch of the last gen in China – and the Corolla at 73,833 sales… Two more models pass the 70,000-units mark this month: the Jetta and Passat, again on the back of mammoth Chinese sales.

VW Passat

The Ford F-Series (+1), VW Golf (-3) and Chevrolet Cruze (-2) follow, while the VW Polo is back in the Top 10 at #9 (+2) and the Ford Fiesta is stable at #10. The Toyota Hilux stays extremely robust in 12th position with just under 50,000 sales, the VW Gol/Voyage surfs on a very dynamic Brazilian market, up 12 spots on September to #15, as does the Fiat Palio/Siena up 19 to #26. The Chevrolet Silverado continues to progress at #17 and should finish the year upwards given the strong incentives GM will offer to get rid of stock of the current model before the 2014 generation launches early next year.

Kia K3

The Hyundai Tucson/ix35 is up again at #19 vs. #32 year-to-date, the Wuling Rongguang smashes its monthly record at 34,220 units and #27 (+17), the Kia Cerato/K3 starts to enjoy the effects of the K3 launch in South Korea and China at #28 (+21), the BMW 3 Series is up a further 4 ranks to #31 vs. #47 year-to-date, the VW Lavida is up 20 to #37 vs. #71 YTD and the Renault Duster, helped by fantastic performances in Russia and India, is up 22 spots to a best-ever #33.

Toyota Aqua

Further down, the Toyota Prius c/Aqua breaks into the worldwide Top 50 for the first time at #43 and 27,720 sales, helped by a historical win in Japan. It now also outsells the Prius for the first time (#53). The Peugeot 208 is getting closer the Top 50 at #54, while the Hyundai Santa Fe stays solid at #68 vs. #90 year-to-date and the Hyundai i20 takes off at #76 (+23) vs. #110 YTD.

Fiat Viaggio

The BYD F3 is the best-selling Chinese Passenger Car in the world for the 2nd month running at #82 with 16,957 sales, just above the Emgrand EC7 at #83 and 16,753 units, the Suzuki Ertiga continues to climb at #125, the VW Up! breaks into the worldwide Top 150 for the first time at #128 thanks to a very strong showing at home in Germany and the Dodge Dart/Fiat Viaggio appears at #178 with 8,347 sales.

Thailand Pick-ups November 2012: Isuzu D-Max catches up

Isuzu D-Max

* See the Top 8 best-selling pick-ups by clicking on the title! Many thanks to Austin *

As is the tradition on BSCB, we are following the evolution of pick-up sales in Thailand, where they are all manufactured. And this month the Isuzu D-Max really impresses: one year after the launch of the 2012 model, it sells 19,234 units for a 35.9% market share vs. 19,617 and 36.6% for the Toyota Hilux. This is the closest the D-Max has come from pole position so far this year. These market shares are to be compared with 39.9% and 31.7% year-to-date for the Hilux and D-Max respectively. The Mitsubishi Triton regains some ground at 10.1% share thanks to 5,421 sales while the Chevrolet Colorado is back in 4th place at 2,986 units.

* See the Top 150 all-models ranking by clicking on the title! Many thanks to Ldman *

The Egyptian new car market is up a very robust 35% year-on-year in November to 18,590 registrations, bringing the year-to-date total to 178,537 units, up 12% on 2011 and already above the Full Year 2011 figure of 176,157 sales. In November the Chevrolet TFR Pick-up, nicknamed ‘El Dabbabah’ (The Tank) in the country, takes the lead of the Egyptian models ranking for the first time since last June and only the third time so far this year with February with 1,780 sales and 9.6% share. It is however still #2 year-to-date at 17,008 units and 9.5% vs. 19,788 and 11.1% for the Hyundai Verna, down to #2 and 9.2% this month.

Chevrolet “El Dabbabah” TFR

The Chevrolet Lanos is very solid at #3 with 1,307 sales and 7% and even passes the Hyundai Elantra (back to #4 in November after two months off) to now rank #3 also year-to-date. Notice the excellent performances in the Top 10 of the Kia Cerato up 4 spots to #7 and 3.7%, the Kia Rio up 12 to #8 and 3.5% and the Kia Carens also up 12 to #9.

Geely Emgrand 7

Further down, the Golden Dragon Haise is back up 23 ranks to #12, the Renault Fluence is up 19 to #34, Suzuki Maruti M800 up 11 to #17, Opel Astra NB up a massive 51 spots to #21, Renault Duster up 21 to #25, Brilliance V5 still strong at #32 and the Geely Emgrand 7 lands directly at #41 with 54 sales for its first month in market.

World 2012: Global sales at a record 80 million new vehicles

Bangkok, Thailand. Picture by songglod. Never before had that many new vehicles been sold in Thailand: 1.4 million predicted for 2012.

* See the full article by clicking on the title! *

LMC Automotive predicts that worldwide 2012 sales of cars and trucks will top 80 million units for the first time, as robust US, Chinese and Japanese markets offset a European downturn. This means the worldwide new vehicle market has grown by a very dynamic 7% on 2011 when 75 million units were sold, which was a record at the time. In fact, 2012 marks the third consecutive record year for worldwide vehicle sales.

Toyota Avanza in Ubud, Bali Indonesia. Toyota should reclaim the title of #1 carmaker in the world in 2012, helped by very strong sales of its hybrid range in Japan and a record performance in Indonesia.

For its part, Canadian Bank Scotia has advanced a forecast of 64 million new car sales in 2013, up 4% to deliver a 4th consecutive record year. Note this figure does not include trucks and commercial vehicles outside of the US and actually constitutes a rather odd prediction. Scotia believes the Chinese market will grow by 10%, the US by 4% and Europe will stagnate.

Back to 2012 and the race to the title of most popular car manufacturer in the world, which Toyota should reclaim in 2012…

USA December 2012: Predicted at +9%, best year since 2007

2014 Chevrolet Silverado. GM went hard on pick-up truck incentives this month to draw down their 139 days of inventory ahead of the introduction of 2014-model trucks in Q2 2013.

* NOW UPDATED with new predictions. See the full article by clicking on the title! *

Automotive News published another round of predictions for the US new car market in December ahead of carmakers’ official figures on Thursday. Sales are expected to rise by 9% year-on-year, capping off the best year for new car sales in the country since 2007. 2012 is predicted to finish at 14.5 million vehicles, a 13% growth over 2011 and impressively the third consecutive year of double-digit year-on-year gain in the US.

Manhattan, Tuesday 30 October 2012. Picture by

The industry also got a boost from sales that were delayed due to Hurricane Sandy, reported Automotive News. Barclays Capital analyst Brian Johnson estimated that 25,000 to 30,000 vehicles sold this month were delayed from November due to Superstorm Sandy. “We note, however, that we do not expect post-storm replacement demand to persist much beyond January,” Johnson said.

So a strong December, but the start of 2013 may be different. Automotive News says “gains in 2013 are expected to slow to single-digit growth, with several analysts forecasting only modest improvements in U.S. consumer confidence and employment.” Indeed the strong end of year could be overshadowed by concerns that consumers will curb spending in January due to the “fiscal cliff”.

Lexus LS600h. Luxury brands have also benefitted from strong incentives this month in the US.

AN reports that “U.S. consumer confidence fell to a 4-month low in December on worries over the $600 billion in automatic spending cuts and tax increases that take effect unless Congress acts to stop them”. Strong incentives on GM full-size pickups and an excellent performance from luxury brands are the other two headlines for December new car sales in the US…

No more annoying ‘Contact us’ tab…

(Just thought I would share one of my favourite car stunts of 2012 as well…)

Today I deleted the ‘Contact us’ button on the left of the screen that was annoyingly hiding part of some articles on mobile devices. There is now a simple ‘Contact’ tab at the top of the screen below the logo and banner ad, along with the ‘Home’, ‘Thank you’, ‘Advertise’ and ‘Services’ sections. Simply click on ‘Contact’ and fill in the form to get in touch with me for any reason. I will email you back in the briefest delays.

One thing also for those of you who are checking out BestSellingCarsBlog from your mobile: you might want to set the ‘mobile theme’ off at the bottom of the page if you want to enjoy all the pictures for each article.

Thank you all for your feedback to make BestSellingCarsBlog a better site each day, and please do keep telling me all the things you think of that could help make this site better, for example by filling the ‘Contact’ form 😉 I appreciate any feedback!
