Australian car sales are down 9% in April at 74,214 registrations and down 3% year-on-year at 322,678 units. The Holden Commodore is the best selling model for the third month in a row at 3,075 sales and 4.1%. However this is only 31 units above the Mazda3, still extremely strong and still number 1 year-to-date at 14,203 sales and 4.4% share. The Toyota Hilux rounds up the podium at 3.9%.

After being launched by Prime Minister Julia Gillard (see below and here), the Holden Cruze Phase II kick-started production in South Australia in March and climbed to a best-ever 4th place and 3.5% market share in April. With the hatch version coming later this year, the question on everyone’s lips is whether the Cruze could pass the Commodore this year to become Holden’s best seller.
