Over the period one model stands out above all the others: the Peugeot 307. With 25,245 sales in 2003 it grabs 5.2% of the Dutch market and follows through with 22,507 sales (4.7%) in 2004 and 15,484 (3.3%) in 2005, staying on top all 3 years.
The second spot changes hands each year, demonstrating the competitiveness of the market. The Peugeot 206 is #2 in 2003 at 3.9% share, the VW Golf takes the relay in 2004 at 3.5% before being cannibalised by its MPV version (the Golf Plus) and the Opel Astra is back in shape in 2005 at 3.1%. Only two other models manage to find their way into the Dutch Top 5 over the period: the Ford Focus peaking at #3 in 2005 and the Renault Scenic peaking at #4 in 2004 and 2005.
A very significant event happens in 2005: after at least 25 of domination from Opel, Volkswagen becomes the best-selling brand in the Netherlands, by a tiny margin with 44,952 sales compared to 44,529 to Opel…
