China 2002: Market up 40.7% to almost 3 million units, VW Jetta leads Passenger Car ranking again

The VW Jetta is the best-selling Passenger Car in China in 2002.

Exceptional year for new vehicle sales in China: up a whopping 40.7% year-on-year to 2,954,986 units. Brand leader Volkswagen (+43.5%) even outraces the market to almost 475,000 sales, distancing Changan (+29.8%) and FAW (+60.8%), the latter up three spots on 2001 to #3. Hafei (+15.8%) is down one to #4 ahead of Foton (+45.5%), Wuling (+22.1%) and Changhe (+9.1%). Buick (+89.9%) enters the Chinese Top 10 for the first time at #8 while Dongfeng (+60.5%), Suzuki (+75.6%), Citroen (+58.2%) and Nissan (+85%) also impress. Newcomer Chery (+61.2%) is up to #19, Geely (+112.3%) up to #20 and Great Wall (+42.5%) at #21.

Previously we only had a Top 20 Passenger Cars ranking for China 2002, now a complete chart including commercial vehicles is available. The Changan Star (+28.7%) keeps the lead above the Foton Forland (+45.5%) and Hafei Carry (+4.8%) to make the podium an exclusively LCV affair. The VW Jetta (+24.3%) repeats atop the Passenger Cars ranking, widening the gap over the VW Santana (+3.5%) just as the VW Santana 2000 (+35.5%) rallies back. The FAW Tianjin Xiali (+39.4%) rebounds well but still can’t match the market growth. The VW Passat (+22.2%), Buick Sail (+98.3%) and Citroen ZX Fukang (+0.6%) follow.
