Malaysia 1997: Proton Wira #1, Perodua Kancil up to #2 in record market just under 400.000 units

The Perodua Kancil is up to #2 in Malaysia in 1997.

New car sales in Malaysia enjoy a 4th consecutive record year at 397.643 registrations, thanks to a 4th straight double-digit gain at +11.5%. Logically Proton (+11.8%) drives its home market with a stable 49.5% share, while other local Perodua (+26.9%) gains two percentage points of share but remains almost 3 times weaker at 17.3%. Toyota (+2.8%) continues to top foreign carmakers ahead of Nissan (+22.9%), Honda (+8%), Isuzu (-3.1%) and Daihatsu (-14.6%). Model-wise, below the untouchable Proton Wira (+10.1%), the Perodua Kancil (+24.1%) which is in fact a rebadged third generation Daihatsu Mira, overtakes the Proton Saga (+10.3%) to climb to #2 for the first time while the Proton Satria (+4.8%) and Tiara (+34.6%) mean the Top 5 is 100% Malaysian for the 2nd time in history after 1995.
