India Full Year 1988: Maruti 800 leads, Premier Padmini outpaces market
The Premier Padmini manages to improve its share to 13.9% in 2nd place

The Indian new vehicle market slows down its growth in 1988 at +8.3% to 229.249 units. For the first time since 1985, brand leader Maruti trails the market and sees its share drop slightly at 43.4% vs. 44.6% a year ago. Reversely, Premier (+12%) rallies back up to 16% share, distancing Mahindra (+6%) at 15.1% and Hindustan (+8%) at 12.3%. The Maruti 800 (+4%) remains by far the most popular vehicle in the country, albeit down to 28.5% are vs. 29.6% in 1987. The Premier Padmini (+10%) manages to outpace the market to reach 13.9% share in 2nd place above the Maruti Omnivan (+3%), Mahindra Jeep (+8%) and Hindustan Ambassador (-2%) in a Top 5 unchanged on 1987.
