New car sales in Liechtenstein are down 6% year-on-year in 2014 to 1.800 registrations. Volkswagen (17.6%) and Audi (10.7%) maintain their grip on the market, followed by BMW, Mercedes and Toyota while Seat is up 63% to #6, Mazda up 31% to #11 and Porsche up 46% to #13. The Seat Alhambra is the hero of the year, going from #58 in 2012, #7 in 2013 to a splendid 2nd place overall this year thanks to 59 sales and 3.3% market share (+59%) below only the VW Golf up 30% and two percentage points share at 6.6% and 118 units. The VW Polo (+16%), Tiguan (-25%) and Skoda Octavia (+54%) complete the Top 5. Being a very limited market in a wealthy and mountainous region, the Liechtenstein models ranking features a handful of luxury SUVs in unusually high spots: the BMW X3 ranks #6, the BMW X5 is at #10, the BMW X1 at #15, Audi Q3 at #16, Audi Q5 at #21 and the Porsche Macan at #25…

Liechtenstein is a 160 square kilometres principality located between Austria and Switzerland and home to 35,000 inhabitants. Over the first 6 months of 2013, 993 new passenger cars found a buyer in the country, down a harsh 18% year-on-year. Volkswagen is still by far the preferred brand thanks to 171 sales for a 17.2% market share, followed like in 2012 by Audi at 104 units and 10.5% and BMW with 82 sales and 8.3%. Toyota is making some interesting inroads this year, up from 5.6% market share over the full year 2012 to 7.9% now and relegating Mercedes in 5th place at 6%. Opel is up from 3.1% to 4.3% at #7, Suzuki up from 2.1% to 3% at #9, Hyundai up from 1.8% to 3% at #10, Citroen up from 1.5% to 2.7% at #12 and Honda up 1.3% to 2.1% at #15.

465 new vehicles found a buyer over the first Quarter of 2013, and as in 2012 Volkswagen and Audi are the two most popular brands, both even improving their market share year-on-year. VW sells 87 units for an outstanding 18.7% share vs. 17.3% in 2012 and Audi is at 54 sales and 11.6% vs. 9.9%. But the most impressive progression is without a doubt delivered by Toyota, going from 5.6% share in 2012 to 9% and 42 units over the period.
Other great performers include BMW (8.6%) and Mercedes (7.1%) both improving their shares even though their drop one spot, Suzuki going from 2.1% in 2012 to 4.1% and #8 now, Mitsubishi exactly doubling its share from 1.7% and #20 to 3.4% and #10 and Honda going from 1.3% to 2.2% at #12.

For only the second time ever on BestSellingCarsBlog I can share with you detailed information about the most popular vehicles in Liechtenstein, a principality home to 35,000 inhabitants which covers 160 square kilometres between Austria and Switzerland. New car sales in the country are up 3% year-on-year in 2012 to 2,108 registrations. Volkswagen is head and shoulders ahead of the competition, placing 4 models in the Top 4! Like in 2011 the VW Golf is king of the mountain roads with 82 sales and 3.9%, and is followed this time by the Passat at 58 units and 2.8% (+9%), the Polo with 51 sales and 2.4% (-34%) and the Tiguan at 49 units and 2.3%, up a fantastic 158% year-on-year.
In fact, the VAG Group monopolises the Top 5 with the Skoda Octavia the next most popular model with 47 sales and 2.2%. Mountainous terrain and a pretty wealthy population is traditionally the perfect recipe for strong SUV sales and Liechtenstein is no exception: the Ford Kuga is up 37% to #7, BMW X3 up 38% to #9, the Subaru XV lands directly at #12 and the Range Rover Evoque is at a world-best #15 with 30 sales and 1.4%, albeit with tiny figures…

After Andorra yesterday, thanks to René Heeres I am able to add an even tinier European nation to the list of countries Best Selling Cars Blog covers: Lichtenstein, also a principality, has just 35,000 inhabitants, covers 160 square kilometres and is located between Austria and Switzerland. And the new car market is in great shape in Lichtenstein in 2011, up 14% year-on-year to 2,029 registrations. Like in its neighbouring countries Volkswagen dominates sales, so much so that it monopolises the podium in 2011, placing the VW Golf at #1 with 83 sales and 4.1%, followed by the Polo at 77 units and 3.8% and the Passat with 53 sales and 2.6%.
The VAG group grabs 4 more spots within the Top 10: the Audi A4 ranks #4, the Skoda Octavia is #5, the Audi Q5 is at #7 with 1.5% share, most probably its best year-end ranking anywhere in the world, and the VW Transporter is #9. BMW places the 5 Series in 6th place and the Mini at #8 and the Ford Fiesta rounds up the Top 10. Notice also the Ford Kuga at #11, the BMW X3 at #13, BMW X1 at #15 and Honda Jazz at #19.
Another very successful brand in Lichtenstein is Porsche… The Porsche Cayenne is up to an extremely impressive 25th spot with 21 sales and 1% share, the Porsche 911 ranks #41 with 15 units and 0.7% share and the Panamera is #82 with 8 sales. Plus the Range Rover ranks at a very respectable #35.
