According to estimates by local manufacturer Proton, the Malaysian new car market records a third consecutive year-on-year gain in August at +3% to 52.675 units, meaning the year-to-date tally is now down -28.5% to 284.920. The market has been propped up by a government stimulus plan launched in June and effective until the end of 2020 that includes a 100% sales tax (SST) exemption on locally-assembled (CKD) models and 50% on fully-imported (CBU) models. Proton celebrates sales up a whopping 24.7% to 11.378, its second best month of the year for a 21.6% share. More symbolically, the brand’s year-to-date volume is now ahead of 2019 at the same stage of the year at 61.672 vs. 61.235, vastly outpacing the market. Proton says the Persona is the best-selling B-Segment sedan, the Exora is the best-selling MPV and the X70 remains the best-selling SUV in Malaysia.
