Thanks to our partnership with autoconsulting.kz, we can share with you today December and Full Year 2016 data for Kazakhstan. It has been an exhausting year in Kazakhstan: the second annual freefall with deliveries down an abysmal 52% to 46.715 units after dropping 40% in 2015, once again hit full frontal by the recession in neighbouring Russia. One carmaker has taken full advantage of the situation: Toyota. The Japanese carmaker is up an incredible 25% to see its market share go from 7.4% in 2015 to a commanding 19.4% this year, leaping from 5th place to pole position. Toyota also manages to place the Camry in the lead of the models ranking with 3.190 sales, up 59% year-on-year and knocking last year’s leader, the Hyundai Accent, down to #8 with sales plummeting 80%.
The GAZ Gazelle is the 2nd best-selling nameplate in Kazakhstan in 2016.
Perennial leader Lada loses two-third of its sales compared to a year ago, falling to 8.147 units and 17.4% share vs. 25.2% in 2015. Renault (-55%) manages to creep up one spot to #3, ahead of Hyundai (-68%), Kia (-66%) GAZ (-53%), Volkswagen (-56%) and UAZ (-51%) all dropping as fast or faster than the market. Nissan (-25%) increases its market share by one percentage point at 3% in 9th spot but Kamaz (+42%), Lexus (+89%), Hyundai Trucks (+89%) and JAC (+516%) sign the most impressive – and only – year-on-year gains in the Top 20. BMW (+41%) and Datsun (+350%) also shine while Ravon (#19), the replacement brand for UZ-Daewoo, and Chinese carmaker Lifan (#24) make their entrance in the sales charts.
Thanks to sales down just 7%, the Lada 4×4 ranks 4th overall in 2016 vs. 10th last year.
The Kazakh models ranking is completely reshuffled for 2016, starting with the 15 spot-jump to #1 of the Toyota Camry mentioned above. The GAZ Gazelle follows the market at -52% but gains four spots to #2 overall, distancing the Lada Priora (-62%) and 4×4 (-7%) by just two and 26 units respectively. The Lada Granta (-74%) falls three ranks to #5 but still makes it three Ladas in the Top 5 like in 2015. The Renault Duster (-50%) advances to #6 and the VW Polo (-58%) to #7, the Toyota Land Cruiser Prado posts a stunning 17% increase, gaining 11 spots to #9 while the Toyota Land Cruiser 200 is yup an staggering 78% and 17 ranks to #10. Other impressive gainers include the Toyota RAV4 (+104%), Toyota Corolla (+26%), Lexus LX (+106%), Nissan Qashqai (+37%) and JAC S3 (+791%). There are five all-new nameplates in the Top 50: the Lifan X60 (#27), Ravon Nexia R3 (#34), Lifan X50 (#43), Lada Vesta (#44) and Nissan Terrano (#48).
