Chile Full Year 2016: Chevrolet Sail resumes domination, Hyundai #1

After two consecutive years of decline, the Chilean new car market is back in positive territory in 2016 at +8% to 305.540 registrations. Change of guard ahead of the brands ranking: Hyundai gains 22% to leapfrog past Chevrolet (-11%) and Kia (+2%) and snap the annual pole position with 31.398 sales and 10.3% share. Suzuki (+9%) overtakes Nissan (+5%) for 4th place, while Toyota (+14%), Peugeot (+39%), Ford (+28%) and Mazda (+12%) all post double-digit gains inside the Top 10. Further down, Mercedes (+29%), Volkswagen (+32%), Citroen (+36%) and Fiat (+41%) stand out. JAC surges 48% to become the #1 Chinese manufacturer in Chile above Great Wall (+6%) and Chery (-4%), with Changan (+20%) and Dongfeng (+43%) also stepping inside the overall Top 25. Chinese carmakers account for 8% of the Chilean market in 2016 vs. 8.4% last year.
Hyundai takes the lead of the brands ranking in 2016.
Model-wise, we also witness a change of guard: the Chevrolet Sail, lifted by a new generation, is back to the pole position it held from 2012 to 2014 with sales soaring up 43% to 12.770. The Hyundai Accent, leader in 2015, is knocked down to 2nd place at 10.988 (+10%) with the Kia Rio (-12%), Morning (+23%) and Suzuki Swift (+5%) rounding up the Top 5. The Toyota RAV4 (+31%) is the best-selling SUV in the country ahed of the Ford Ecosport (#10), Nissan Qashqai (#11), Mazda CX-5 (#12) and Hyundai Tucson (#13). The Hyundai Grand i10 impresses at +79% to 7th place overall, while the Renault Symbol breaks into the Top 10. The most popular recent launches (<12 months) are the Hyundai Creta (#38), JAC S2 (#53) and Suzuki Baleno (#60) and the best-selling Chinese nameplates are the Chery Tiggo (#39), JAC S3 (#40) and Great Wall Haval M4 (#51).
