Malaysian new car sales are down a further 13% to 44.669 units in May, pulling the year-to-date total down 18% to just 218.101 deliveries in five months vs. 264.818 over the same period a year ago. Leader Perodua follows the market at -12% to 34.1% share and Toyota comes in at #2 despite sales down 19% to a strong 13.7% share vs. 9.4% year-to-date. Honda is down 9% to 12.7% but remains #2 year-to-date at 13.9% whereas Proton crumbles 39% to 11.3% share vs. 13.2% so far this year. Further down, Volkswagen continues to impress at +133%, with BMW (+27%), Isuzu (+26%), Kia (+23%) and Daihatsu (+23%) also frankly outpacing the market.
Model-wise, the Top 5 is stable once again with the Perodua Axia the solid leader at 14.8% share ahead of the Perodua Alza (10.3%), Myvi (9%), Proton Saga (7%) and Honda HR-V (5.9%). The Toyota Vios stays at #6 and gains one spot year-to-date to #7 while the Toyota Hilux, down to a low #24 in April, catches up on lost ground this month, ranking 7th with almost double the market share it holds so far in 2016 at 3.8% vs. 2%. In fact, most Toyotas get a welcome boost such as the Corolla (#12), Hiace (#16), Camry (#20) and Avanza (#22).
