After posting five consecutive all-time record years from 2011 to 2015, the Danish new car market could be forgiven for taking a break this year. Not a chance. May sales are up a whopping 24% to an all-time high 21.141 units, boosting the year-to-date tally up 12% to 93.220 and well on track for a 6th record year in a row. Volkswagen is the best-selling brand in the country, however losing share at 11.1% (+19%) while Peugeot shoots up 61% to 1.863 sales and 9.3% share. Just below, Toyota (+68%) and Opel (+65%) also improve drastically. Seat (+59%), Volvo (+64%), BMW (+76%), Mazda (+85%), Porsche (+283%) and Jaguar (+386%) are the other great performers this month. Model-wise, the Peugeot 208 cements its newfound domination with exactly double the sales of any other nameplate in the country including perennial leader the VW Up. It sells 1.102 units for a 5.2% share vs. 542 and 2.6% for the Up and 522 and 2.5% for the Toyota Aygo on the third step of the podium. In a market obsessed with city cars, the VW Passat delivers an outstanding performance at #5 overall in May, up 20 spots on last month, as does the Skoda Octavia up 7 to #7. The Opel Astra is helped up to #8 by the new generation while the Suzuki Baleno lands directly in the Top 50 at #47 for its first month of sales in Denmark. Promising.
