Kiribati is an island nation located in the Pacific Ocean, pronounced “Kiribas” as “ti” in Kiribatese makes an “s” sound. The 33 atolls and reef islands forming the nation are dispersed over a whopping 3.5 million km2 (1.351.000 sq mi), spreading across the equator, although the Date Line is indented to bring the Line Islands in the same day as the Kiribati Islands. Kiribati also extends into the eastern, western, northern and southern hemispheres, being the only country in the world that is situated within all four hemispheres.
Kiribati never rises over two metres above see level and as such is in the front line of nations most vulnerable to increasing sea levels due to global warming. The capital and now most populated area, South Tarawa, consists of a number of islets, connected by a series of causeways – like the one pictured below.
Kiribati – a paradise soon to be lost?
These causeways are mainly traveresed by various generations of Toyota Hiace, the most popular vehicle in the country for a while, including 2015 when it sold 34 units (+3%), accounting for over half of the total new registrations of Kiribati. Toyota holds 75% of the market.
